  • Abstract: This article analyzes the encyclopedic article in French «Les littératures non-soviétiques de langue russe» («Non-Soviet literatures in Russian»), written by M. Aldanov in 1936 for the French Encyclopedia (Encyclopédie française). This little-known and untranslated text was published in the 17th volume of this encyclopedia, dedicated to the current state of arts and literatures in different languages. The review of Russian literature is divided here into three sections: «Non-Soviet literatures in Russian» (M. Aldanov, 3 pages), «Soviet literatures in Russian» (I. Ehrenburg, 5 pages) and «Soviet literatures in other languages» (O. Savich, 3 pages). The encyclopedic article under study consists of the follow- ing headings: definition of emigration literature, obstacles to its literary activity and its break with its native soil, general trends (political trends, religious feeling, artistic movements), emigrant writers and foreign culture. Our work presents a translation of this text and its commentary. The following topics are also studied: translations in the works of M. Aldanov, the question of the writer’s European- ness, the image of France in the life and work of M. Aldanov, French contempo- raries of M. Aldanov: Anatole France and Marcel Proust.
