Abstract: The objectives of this study are related to the search for an answer to the question: what sources were used by Posev publishing house for the publication of The Master and Margarita by M.A. Bulgakov (released in 1969), which opened the full text of the novel to Russian-speaking readers for the first time. The article considers the specifics of the text sources that were available for Posev publishing house (this topic is practically not represented in the currently known corpus of works on the history of Bulgakov's novel; it was first touched upon in the works of L.M. Yanovskaya). The authors of the article conduct a comparative analysis of both published and unpublished sources related to the publication history of the novel in “Moskva”, the Soviet literary magazine, as well as the sources of preparation of the novel for publication by Posev publishing house (in particular, documents stored in the archive of the publishing house), as well as with the German translation of the novel released by Luchterhand publishing house. The source analysis leads to the following conclusion: by the publication of the novel in Posev publishing house not only the editions of the censored text, as well as a separate edition of the censored fragments of the novel themselves (published in 1967 in Bern) were used as the sources, but also the German translation of the novel’s full text, made by T. Reschke and G. Drohla.
