Abstract: The main points of the emigration life of the Russian literary critic S. Vilinsky are reconstructed on the basis of a wide range of archival sources and scientific literature in the article. The chief trends of his creativity during his stay in the Czechoslovak Republic are considered. Therefore, the biobibliographic information concerning his scientific activities, works on the history of literature in the field of medieval studies and modern era become of particular importance. The political and social-economic situation in which he lived, the coincidence of circumstances that affected the development and direction of his scientific activity are analyzed. The academic adaptation of a Russian scientist during the emigration period is considered. It is noted that the introduction of S. Vilinsky to living conditions and scientific work in another country were determined by objective and subjective factors: the policy of local authorities concerning emigrants, as well as the psychological characteristics of the scholar's personality. Attention is paid to the most significant events in his life, which to a certain extent contributed to his scientific direction change.
