Abstract: Active study of the first wave Russian emigration problems has become possible in Russia only since the second half of 1980s. However, there are still large gaps in this field, one of which is concerned with the process of Russian emigrants’ repatriation in 1920s–1930s, as well as in 1940s. And, although the life of cultural figures who returned to their homeland has been studied more thoroughly, this applies primarily to the most prominent figures, whose international and Russian authority determined their special place in the Soviet culture. Meanwhile, the materials and conclusions about the role and destiny of ordinary emigrants can become the basis for designing the background panorama necessary for generalizing conclusions. This article significantly complements the biography of German Dmitrievich Khokhlov (1908–1938), a literary critic who worked both abroad and in the Soviet Union. At the same time, the analysis of his literary and critical work allows, comparing it with the work of other re-emigrant writers, to draw a conclusion about systematic destruction of the very group of “repatriates by conviction.”
