Abstract: The article attempts to examine the poorly studied aspect of Piotr M. Bitsilli’s biography — the history of the formation and development of his academic priorities. The study of this issue was based on the literature available in historiography and new historical sources identified in Odessa archives. These materials allow us to state that P.M. Bitsilli independently determined his academic path. Among the scholars who had a slight influence on the formation of his scientific priorities was V.E. Krusman, whereas E.R. von Stern, E.N. Shchepkin and B.V. Varneke formally contributed to his career advancement in higher education.
