Abstract: The are several topics under the consideration in the article, which are interesting to my mind in the context of the intellectual biography of Piotr M. Bitsilli in general: Bitsilli’s background and early works, the importance of Medieval and Italian history for Bitsilli, Medieval studies in Russia before the revolution. My analysis of the early writings of Bitsilli (devoted to the Italian medieval history in particular) is focused on the problem of the social conflicts and movements and their interpretation in the historical narratives and sources; it includes also the interpretation of the idea of the New Middle Ages.
