Piotr Bitsilli and the Journal “Novyi Grad”

Abstract: The article is devoted to the history of cooperation of the outstanding humanist-encyclopedist Piotr M. Bitsilli with the Paris emigrant journal “Novyi Grad” (1931–1939). Bitsilli was not only one of the most active authors of the journal, but had a considerable impact on the formation of the “novogradstvo” — the original post-revolutionary movement of the Russian diaspora, which largely determined the mindset of emigration and emigrant youth in the pre-war decade. The article explores the deep intersections of the Bitsilli’s views with those of “Novyi Grad” ideologists who developed the concept of “social Christianity”. The article also analyzes a number of Bitsilli’s program publications on the pages of the “Novyi Grad” journal.
