History as Criticism: About “An Attempt at the Theory of Historical Science” by Piotr Bitsilli

Abstract: The subject of consideration is Piotr M. Bitsilli’s understanding of modern historical knowledge as essentially romantic and stemming from this concept of history. Particularly analyzed is the relationship between history and autobiography. On this basis, the specificity of the historian’s position and his proximity to the position of the critic are determined. Accordingly, history itself appears as an art object –– and the problem of periodization actually becomes an option for determining a specific art form.
