Unpublished Letters of I.Z. Serman and E.G. Etkind to M.G. Altshuller

Abstract: The article presents for the first time E. Etkind’s and I. Serman’s letters to M. Altshuller. The letters were written in 1979, when M. Altshuller and his wife E. Dryzhakova emigrated from the USSR to the USA. By finding themselves in a new (and in many ways unusual) environment, former Soviet scientists could only rely on their friends’ help and support from their fellow Russian studies scholars. Recommendations by Serman and Etkind provided that kind of support. These recommendations, intended for American universities, provide an objective assessment of Altshuller's scientific path. The published letters include information about the scientific outlines of famous scientists and their research works. The name of Iurii Mikhailovich Lotman, M. Altshuller’s friend and colleague, is constantly mentioned in the recommendations. The names of the two scientists were not accidentally related to each other: in the case of I. Serman and E. Etkind the cooperation of Tartu and Leningrad philologists has become entrenched in the history of literary studies forever.
