The Problems of Textology in the Literature of Russia Abroad

Abstract: The texts of Russian émigré authors abroad have their own specifics and require as serious preparation for publication as all Russian classics. Over the past thirty years, the works collections by I. Bunin, I. Shmelev, B. Zaitsev, A. Remizov, D. Merezhkovskii, Sasha Chernyi and many others have been published. The article deals with the problems of textual criticism, typical for the literature of the Russia Abroad: texts transition from the old spelling to the new one, the ideological editing of the texts due to the change in the author’s political views, the choosing of the main source of the text, corresponding to the author's creative will. The most difficult question is the attitude of the textual critic to the writer’s will, sometimes fixed in the documents. This discussion that started in 1960s between academicians K. Guraskii and D. Likhachev suggests now new aspects of solving this problem.
