Russian Voice in Finland

Abstract: The article is devoted to the “Russian voice in Finland”, which for 17 years sounded monologue (mostly imperial-official) in the pro-government “Finland newspaper” (1900–1917). During the collapse of the empire, polyphony appears in the highly ramified Russian-language press of the Grand Duchy, due to the variety of political ideas and, accordingly, the variety of periodicals. The author of the article focuses on the programmatic speeches of the private “Voice of the Russian Colony” newspaper (1918), the publisher-editor of which was K.I. Arabazhin. The newspaper, created by the community, was called, as the study showed, to help Russian emigrants and refugees “to have their needs met in education, enlightenment, Russian books, newspapers, theaters, in the creation of professional organizations”, etc., to raise their “Voice” in defense of the Russian population of Finland, to stand up for its “unity” on the basis of culture and creativity. Unfortunately, due to the lack of funds and professional staff, the newspaper's voice was barely audible, and its life was short-lived.
