Abstract: Nikolai Rusanov, an outstanding figure of the Narodniks and socialist-revolutionary organizations, spent two-thirds of his creative life in emigration and only one-third in Russia, and the emigrant period can clearly be split into two parts: under the tsarist government and under the Soviet system. Technically, Rusanov's work in both periods should be recognized as emigration. But there is undoubted and fundamental difference between these periods, based on the fact which reader the works of a particular period are addressed to. What Rusanov wrote abroad during the tsarist period was addressed to a reader living in the metropolis, and was assumed to get his response. What Rusanov wrote abroad during the Soviet period was addressed to a reader who lived in the diaspora, and did not imply a response from the reader of the metropolis. In addition, there are two more differences between these periods. During the tsarist time, Rusanov was also published in Russia (primarily in the “Russian Wealth” magazine), although using pseudonyms, which did not deceive the investigative bodies of the government. In Soviet Russia Rusanov was not published due to the lack of editions suitable for his texts. Only two of his emigrant texts (memoirs) appeared in print, but were indispensably accompanied by disavowing comments from the Soviet historians. Thus, it is necessary to raise the question of the difference that existed between emigrants before and after 1917, although this requires the study of similar figures and situations.
