Yuri A. Azarov

 

Leading Research Associate, Doctor of Philological Sciences

In 1978, graduated from the Romance-Germanic Department of the Faculty of Philology at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), followed by full-time postgraduate studies at the Department of History of Foreign Literature. In 1987, defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation titled “Main Trends in Literary Studies and Criticism in Britain After World War II” at the same institution. Since 1983, he has been working at the Institute of World Literature (IMLI), currently holding the position of Leading Research Associate at the Department of Contemporary Russian Literature and Russian Émigré Literature. In 2006, he defended his Doctoral dissertation “Literary Centers of the First Russian Émigration: History, Development, and Interaction” at IMLI.

He is a specialist in the study of 20th-century Russian literature, contemporary Russian literature, émigré literature, comparative literary studies, textology, and the interconnections between literature and philosophy. He is the author of numerous encyclopedic articles and scholarly works on these topics, published both in Russia and abroad. For over ten years, he has led the group on Russian émigré literature. He serves as the editor-in-chief and compiler of the scholarly series “Literature of the Russian Diaspora. 1920–1940,” founded in 1989 by O.N. Mikhailov.

In 2022, he was awarded a certificate of recognition by IMLI RAS “For Long-Term Diligent Work and Scientific Achievements.”

He is a member of the Union of Writers of Russia and has received diplomas and medals, including “60 Years of the Moscow City Organization of the Union of Writers of Russia” and “I.A. Bunin (1870–1953).”

He has served as a scientific supervisor and consultant for postgraduate students and candidates seeking academic degrees. He is a member of the dissertation council 24.1.080.03 at IMLI RAS, specializing in 5.9.1. Russian Literature and Literatures of the Peoples of the Russian Federation (Philological Sciences) and 5.9.3. Theory of Literature (Philological Sciences).

At various times, he has contributed to organizing the institute’s international connections, serving as a coordinator for joint research projects with the Slavic Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Institute of World Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, including “Theoretical Aspects of Studying Literary Processes at the Turn of the 20th–21st Centuries,” “Special Interliterary Communities: Issues of Theory and Practice,” and others.

He has participated in scientific projects funded by grants. As a leader, he managed RGNF grants for the preparation of collective works: Literature of the Russian Diaspora. 1920–1940: IMLI RAS, 2004 – Issue 3; 2008 – Issue 5. With the support of a publishing grant from the Federal Targeted Program “Culture of Russia,” he published the book: Azarov, Iu.A. Dialogue Across Barriers. Literary Life of the Russian Diaspora: Emigration Centers, Periodicals, and Connections (1918–1940). Moscow: Sovpadenie, 2005.
