Doctor of Philological Sciences, Chief Research Fellow of the Department of Literatures of the Russian Federation and CIS Nations at the Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMLI RAN).
Born in 1946 in Moscow. In 1964, he graduated from high school in Tbilisi. From 1964 to 1969, he studied at the Philological Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University. From 1969 to 1974, he was a lecturer at Moscow State University. In 1974, he entered postgraduate studies at the Institute of World Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now RAS). In 1979, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation (PhD) and has been working at this institute ever since; in 1998, he defended his Doctor of Sciences dissertation (Dr. hab.) on "Russian Poetry of the 1920s-1930s in Russia and Abroad (Paths of Development and Interaction)."
From April 2003 to January 2005 – Head of the Department of Literatures of the Russian Federation and CIS Nations at IMLI RAN.
From January 2005 to January 2016 – Deputy Director of IMLI RAN.
Since 2016 – Chief Research Fellow of the Department of Literatures of the Russian Federation and CIS Nations.
In 1994–1995, he was a visiting scholar at Yale University (USA).
He participated in a number of international and all-Russian conferences, including: "National Cultures in the Modern World. Folklore. Literature" (Sukhumi, October 22–26, 2003; Sukhumi, October 15–19, 2012), "Problems of Teaching American Students Abroad" (Trinity College, Hartford, USA; October 2004), "Literary Abroad. Kulakovsky's Address 'To the Yakut Intelligentsia'" (Moscow, Moscow House of Nationalities, November 21–22, 2012), and others.
A. I. Chagin is the author of three books and more than 100 articles in various periodicals, academic collections, and encyclopedias.
He is a member of the editorial boards of the "Literary Encyclopedia of the Russian Abroad. 1918–1940," the "Literary Studies Journal," and many collective works of the Department of Literatures of the Russian Federation and CIS Nations at IMLI RAN.
His research interests are associated with the study of 20th-century Russian literature, issues of literary theory, and the interaction of literatures.
